What is a tubular skylight or Sun Tunnel?
It is an innovative alternative to a traditional skylight. A tubular skylight that is 10” in diameter can bring in as much light as a 2’ x 3’ traditional skylight with less expense, less mess, and it can be installed in about two hours.
What is a dome (bubble) skylight?
A bubble skylight is made of clear acrylic plastic that can be installed into existing openings from which the old skylight was removed. The acrylic plastic is prone to cracking and breaking under severe weather conditions such as hail or just exposure and time in the natural elements.
Does VELUX® manufacture residential dome (bubble) skylights?
No. VELUX manufactures only dual pane, argon gas filled, Low-E coated, flat glass skylights. The glass used in VELUX products is very energy efficient and does not deteriorate like the plastic in bubbles or domes.
I have a very large skylight that does not meet “custom” skylight size. Can I still get a dome (bubble) replacement from Skylight Solutions?
Yes. We are partners with many plastic dome manufacturers where the skylight application must call for nothing but the acrylic dome replacement.
Does VELUX make custom sized skylights?
Yes. VELUX can make some custom sized skylights that vary from the standard sizes. They can also make many custom sizes for the skylight retrofit (curb mount replacement) skylights.
I've always heard that skylights leak. Do they?
The old, acrylic dome skylights that many people have do leak. They were commercial grade skylights that were not meant for residential use, with a life expectancy of less than 10 years. We replace the acrylic domes with new glass skylights and flashing system that are designed not to leak. Will new VELUX skylights heat up my home like my current acrylic domes?
No. All VELUX skylights have low-E glass and Argon gas between the panes, blocking out most of the heat causing ultraviolet rays. The old acrylic dome skylights have no insulating qualities.
How much does it cost to replace an existing acrylic or glass skylight?
To replace a skylight starts at $350, depending on the size. If we need to reflash the skylight because of leakage due to a flashing problem, you will need to add the price of flashing to that. Flashing prices start at $300, depending on the size.
What does it cost for a new skylight installation?
The price will vary depending on several factors, including the size and the type of ceiling (flat or vaulted). However, generally, a new 2' x 4' fixed skylight installed will be priced at approximately $2,500 each, including the framing, taping, and painting of the skylight shaft.
